Unit Management Committee

All Sea Cadet Units are individual registered charities set up to work with young people aged 12-18 (Juniors 10-12) by providing nautically based activities and training with a distinctly ‘naval’ feel.

As a charity, it is a requirement to have Trustees who oversee the business and management of the Unit, and in the Sea Cadets these responsibilities are carried out by the Unit Management Committee (UMC). This means that the UMC is responsible for the day-to-day management of the charity, which is in essence like running a small business.

The Unit Management Committee is made up of volunteers (like staff & cadets) whose primary role is to raise funds to keep the unit running, and providing the best possible training for the cadets and staff.

The UMC need to be very dedicated to their roles, as it costs approx £8000 per year just to run the unit. That is without any training aids or luxuries that the unit may also require throughout the year.
